Toothbrushes for Kibera

Mission

"Provide children in Kibera with toothbrushes and toothpaste to improve their oral hygiene."

“Toothbrushes for Kibera” focuses on teaching kids the importance of brushing their teeth in order to maintain a healthy mouth and prevent tooth decay in the future. Our goal is to donate toothbrushes to the school children of Kibera- the largest slum in Kenya.

Due to increasing demands by the youth of the slum and the rapid increase in poor health hygiene and sanitation in the slums, we have examined many children in schools and found a profound need to teach these children how to brush their teeth. Many children as young as six years of age already have cavities in their adult teeth, which will eventually lead to their teeth weakening and deteriorating when they are older.

Our vision is to teach kids how to brush their teeth and leave tooth brushes in primary schools throughout Kibera. The children are then able to brush their teeth once a day after their lunch in order to help maintain some strength in their teeth and slow down decay.  These toothbrushes are kept in the safekeeping of the teacher and are marked by the names of the children, to prevent accidental sharing. The children are taught that if they do not have toothpaste, they can use water and salt.

AHCP is working in partnership with a toothbrush company, which povide us with toothbrush kits (including one toothbrush and toothpaste). Since February 2013, more than 5500 children in 26 informal and formal primary schools we have partnerships with in Kibera, Mathare and Mukurualready beneficiated from this project. We are currently starting new partnerships with new schools and we hope to obtain new toothbrush kits and to expand this project.
